HELPING YOU HEAL FROM DIFFICULT EXPERIENCES WITHOUT STAYINGSTUCK IN THE PAST

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Do difficult memories, emotions, or experiences still feel like they are affecting your life today?

You may find yourself replaying painful memories, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding certain situations, or reacting strongly to experiences that others don't seem to notice. Perhaps you have tried to move forward, but it still feels like your past is showing up in your present.

Trauma is not always caused by one major event. Sometimes it is the result of ongoing experiences, such as childhood trauma, emotional neglect, difficult relationships, bullying, grief, or chronic stress. No matter what you have experienced, you deserve support that helps you move beyond simply coping.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process difficult memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming. Instead of reliving painful experiences, many people find they are able to remember them without the same intensity, allowing them to move forward with greater confidence, calm, and hope.

At Holding Space for You Psychotherapy, we provide EMDR therapy within a compassionate, trauma-informed, and personalized approach, ensuring therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you.

WHAT IS EDMR THERAPY?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from traumatic or distressing life experiences.

When we experience something overwhelming, our brain doesn't always process the memory in the same way it processes everyday experiences. As a result, those memories can continue to feel emotionally and physically distressing long after the event has passed.

EMDR helps your brain reprocess these memories, so they become less emotionally overwhelming. While you may still remember what happened, the memory often feels less distressing, allowing you to respond differently in the present.

EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. It is also used to support a range of other concerns, including anxiety, low self-esteem, and distressing life experiences.

What Can EMDR Therapy Help With?

EMDR may be helpful for a variety of concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood trauma

  • Complex trauma (C-PTSD)

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Betrayal trauma

  • Distressing or intrusive memories

  • Negative core beliefs

  • Low self-esteem and self-worth

  • Grief and loss

  • Stressful or overwhelming life experiences

EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity of difficult memories so they no longer feel like they're controlling your life.

What to Expect During EMDR Therapy

Beginning EMDR can feel like a big step, especially if you are unsure what the process involves. We understand that starting trauma therapy can feel vulnerable, and we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

EMDR is much more than simply moving your eyes back and forth. Therapy begins by building a strong foundation of safety, trust, and coping skills before any trauma processing takes place.

During your therapy journey, you can expect to:

  • Learn grounding and emotional regulation skills

  • Develop strategies to help you feel safe during sessions

  • Identify memories or experiences that continue to affect you

  • Process those experiences at a pace that feels manageable

  • Strengthen more adaptive beliefs about yourself and your experiences

You are always in control of the process. We will never ask you to move faster than feels right for you.
