HELPING YOUR MIND AND BODY FEEL SAFE, CALM, AND CONNECTED AGAIN

Somatic Experiencing Therapy

Have you ever felt like your body is still holding onto stress, even when your mind knows you are safe?

Maybe you notice tension that never seems to go away, feel constantly on edge, or find yourself easily overwhelmed by stress. You may experience racing thoughts, difficulty relaxing, emotional numbness, or feel like your body is always prepared for something to go wrong.

After stressful or overwhelming experiences, our nervous system can sometimes stay in a protective state long after the danger has passed. Even when we understand something logically, our body may continue to respond as though it needs to stay alert.

Somatic Experiencing is a gentle, body-oriented approach that helps regulate the nervous system, increase your sense of safety, and support healing from stress and trauma. Rather than focusing only on talking through difficult experiences, this approach helps you notice and respond to what your body is communicating.

At Holding Space for You Psychotherapy, we integrate Somatic Experiencing into our trauma-informed approach to help you reconnect with yourself, regulate your nervous system, and experience greater calm, balance, and resilience.

WHAT IS SOMATIC EXPERIENCING?

Somatic Experiencing is an evidence-informed, body-oriented approach developed to help people recover from the effects of trauma, chronic stress, and overwhelming life experiences.

Rather than focusing only on thoughts or memories, Somatic Experiencing also pays attention to how stress and emotions are experienced in the body.

The goal is not to relive difficult experiences. Instead, we gently help your nervous system move toward a greater sense of regulation, safety, and flexibility.

As your nervous system becomes more regulated, many people notice improvements in both emotional and physical well-being.

What to Expect in Somatic Experiencing Therapy

Many people are surprised to learn that Somatic Experiencing is not about intense emotional processing or reliving traumatic experiences.

Instead, we will work together at a pace that feels comfortable while helping you become more aware of your body's responses.

During therapy, you may:

  • Notice how stress shows up in your body.

  • Learn practical grounding strategies.

  • Develop greater awareness of your nervous system.

  • Explore physical sensations with curiosity rather than fear.

  • Build a greater sense of safety and regulation.

  • Strengthen your ability to manage stress and overwhelming emotions.

There is never pressure to move faster than feels right for you.
